Air conditioners are fast changing from a luxury good to a necessity. Large parts of India swelter in summer as the climate turns hot and dry. Temperatures have been on the rise in recent times. The last decade has been widely recognized as the hottest decade even in recorded human history and it does not look like it is going to better anytime soon. In India, a large proportion of the population purchases an air conditioner for the very first time every year and hence it is a growing market which peaks every summer.
At India5best, our aim is to provide you with the best information possible for you to make a decision on your next purchase. To achieve this, we structure our content in a consistent way across different product categories. We have content which consists of buying guides, informational articles and pages on individual brands which has reviews for individual products of that brand.
Before we get into that, lets talk about some things you need to keep in mind as your purchase your next air conditioner. We have made this into a question answer format where you can see the various factors that you need to consider while making each decision.
Should I buy a window air conditioner or a split air conditioner?
Window air conditioners have been the standard for home air conditioning for many decades. Over the past decade or so however, split air conditioners have become much more popular and have taken over most of the market. So if you are looking for an air conditioner today, getting a split air conditioner makes most sense.
Split ACs offer Space Saving: Since Split ACs have two separate units, only one of which needs to be placed indoors, you can save a lot of space in your room with a split air conditioner. The two units are connected by a pipe and some wiring and this only requires a small opening in the wall for the connection to be made. This removes the need for making any large openings in your walls or window grills specifically to fit an air conditioner.
Since Split ACs can be mounted on the wall, they can be placed high up to ensure they do no encroach on any existing appliances or furnishings in your room. This again enables you to save space and also provides cooling in a way that cools your room evenly from top
Quieter Operation: Due to the splitting of the air conditioner into two separate units, the main noise producing components of the air conditioner, namely the compressor is moved to the outside. This ensures that the unit which is indoors produces much lower noise. This leads to quieter operation and a better nights sleep for you.
Buy a window AC only if you have to: In case you have a room where there is already a slot cut out for a window air conditioner, then it is not a bad idea to purchase a window AC for it. Window ACs are cheaper than their split AC counterparts and provide equally effective cooling. With the introduction of inverter technology in window ACs, you also get the benefits of lower electricity consumption in window ACs as well.
Should I buy an Inverter AC?
Inverter ACs have revolutionized air conditioning. From compressors which could run only on two settings – full speed and completely off, inverter technology has enabled ACs to run at variable speeds to match the load required for the room. Lets look at the differences between inverter and non inverter ACs and what are the advantages provided by each.
Lesser temperature fluctuation: Inverter ACs enable the compressor within the air conditioner to run at variable speeds. This ensures that the air conditioner is able to adjust the amount of cooling in your room as per the requirement. Due to this, the temperature fluctuation within the room is much lesser and hence you get a more comfortable night’s sleep.
Quieter operation: Since the compressor in an inverter air conditioner does not completely shut off, the noise produced by the air conditioner when it has reached a steady state is very low. This compares favorable to non-inverter ACs where the compressor runs either at full speed or is completely shut off. The compressor makes a lot more noise when running at full speed and also makes a lot of noise while starting up. Inverter ACs therefore are a better choice when it comes to better comfort.
Lower electricity consumption: In a steady state, Inverter ACs run on a low speed which consumes a minimum amount of electricity. This also avoids the electricity intensive process of starting up again and again which happens with a non inverter air conditioner. Therefore, over a period of operation, inverter ACs come out as cheaper as compared to non-inverter ACs.
Higher initial cost and maintenance: Inverter ACs work on the same basic principle as non inverter ACs. The difference is that inverter ACs have an extra component called the inverter. This additional component increases the initial purchase cost and also increases the maintenance cost. However, given that inverter ACs have a lower running cost, you will recoup this investment in a matter of time.
What capacity Air Conditioner should I buy?
Air conditioners have a cooling capacity which is measured in tons. While this may sound like a measure of how heavy the air conditioner is, a ton is the amount of heat required to melt 1000 Kilograms of ice in 24 hours. So a one-ton air conditioner running for an entire day removes enough heat from your room to melt a ton of ice in that 24 hour period. So now that we know the definition of the unit used in air conditioning, lets look at the guidelines as to what cooling capacity you require for your room.
Air conditioning capacity by room size
Based on the size of the room that you want to cool with an air conditioner, you need to decide upon the capacity of the air conditioner that you need to purchase. Now, the ideal measurement will be based on the volume of the room which needs to take into the account the floor area as well as the height of the room. For most practical purposes however, the floor size is a good enough measure to go by to figure out what capacity air conditioner is required.
Below is a table which can be used as a rule of thumb. As you can see, air conditioners are available in different capacities, right from 0.8 tons which will work great for a small room, up to 2 Tons which is fantastic if you want to cool a large room like a living or dining room.
|Floor Size||Air Conditioner Capacity|
|Upto 100 sq feet||0.8 Tons|
|Upto 150 sq feet||1.0 Tons|
|Upto 250 sq feet||1.5 Tons|
|Upto 400 sq feet||2.0 Tons|
