Our process of picking the top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India
Our rules were
- Proven track record with excellent field reviews
- Good after sales and service support
- High Brand quality with excellent corporate values
While picking the list of the top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India, we stuck to simple rules. First being that the product must have a proven track record. This means that the product should have excellent field reviews. Next, given that technology is evolving, the features of the product should be upto date. We definitely do not want to recommend a product which makes you feel like you have purchased a rock. Third, the product must have good after sales and service support. It feels horrible to buy an expensive electronic item and then have it malfunction.
Last but not the least, we will recommend products from known and proven brands only. This might mean that we won’t include the cheapest available option. It also might mean that you might comes across a brand that you have not heard of before. But this will only be because that brand has not proven itself in India yet but it might be globally recognized.

Top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India – Individual Reviews
We have many established brands in this list of the top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India. We promised you that we will not ignore products that might not have a long track record. But they need to have a recent history of success with customers. One such brand in recent times has been Kevin. The brand has made a big splash in the field of LED TVs and have released models from 32 to 55 inches. Their TVs have been very well received by consumers. The brand has not invested much in marketing and distribution. These cost benefits are being passed straight through to their customers. Their products are some of the cheapest TVs available anywhere in the world right now. These TVs look quite premium and deliver a solid performance as well. Lets look at their 40 inch model – the KN40S in more detail. One thing we must mention upfront is that this model is a Smart TV. Lets see if the product also matches up in other departments.
One of the standout features of the picture quality in this model is that the panel is A+ Grade achromatic. This means that while manufacturing, the base is a completely transparent material. This provides better color transparency and colors appear more vivid on your screen. This also means that the TV has a large viewing angle of 178 degrees. The refresh rate of the TV is a standard 60 Hz. The TV also supports 16.7 million colors. This is another feature which helps in sharp colors on screen. The picture quality is quite good.
The Kevin TV comes with a sound output of 20W. The speakers are box speakers with high fidelity. The output is higher than the base of 16W that we have come across in other TVs. The quality and depth of sound are quite acceptable. Audiophiles might want to look into getting a sound bar for a richer experience.
The Kevin TV comes with a whole bunch of connectivity options. Along with the standard 2 HDMI and 2 USB ports, the TV has many other options. An input for your PC, 2 for audio video and 1 RF co-axial input are available. This pretty much covers any connectivity eventuality you might have. The list of surprising features on the Kevin has not ended yet. The TV has an Ethernet port. This can help you connect to the internet without even needing WiFi.
With the current feature set and price, the Kevin 40 inch TV is a very very good Value for Money buy.
The traditional powerhouses in TV manufacturing have been the Japanese and Koreans. Sony, LG and Samsung are the big names here. In recent times, a Chinese company has risen through the ranks. It is now in line to soon become the biggest TV manufacturer globally. TCL corporation started off as a manufacturer of knock off audio cassettes. Today, with shrewd investments, timely joint ventures and a strong local economy, TCL has come of age. It is still best known TV manufacturer. In India, they have TV offerings right from 32 inches to 65 inches. Lets look at this model – the L40D2900 in more detail. This is a non smart TV.
This TCL model comes with full HD (1920×1080) and the TV has a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The TV does not have any advanced image processing technology. But HD video displayed is of high quality. There are a couple of special display related features. The TV features adaptive backlight dimming which improves contrast and quality. Cinema mode on the TV adjusts the aspect ratio of the movie. This gives you the viewing experience as intended by the movie makers.
The sound output from each of the in-built speakers on the TCL is 8W, leading to a total output of 16W. To optimize the listening experience the TV comes equipped with Dolby surround sound. This leads to a much more immersive TV watching. The sounds you will hear will be richer and deeper as compared to other TVs of comparable output. The TV also comes with a smart volume feature. This feature adjusts the volume basis the sound source. This means that you will not get a loud blast of sound when you are changing channels. The sound quality is very good for the price point at which this TV is being offered.
The TCL has many connectivity options available. Along with the standard 2 USB and 2 HDMI ports, the TV also has 1 VGA input for your laptop. It also has separate inputs for your DVD and/or your VCR. If you would like to connect your professional AV amplifier system, there is an SPDIF input available as well.
This TCL model is not a smart TV. Hence the many connectivity options make it a breeze to set up various media sources.
Most other manufacturers offer a 1 year standard maunfacturer warranty. TCL is offering it for 1.5 years. This shows confidence in their product and is a good sign for potential buyers. TCL also provides free installation and mounting of the TV once delivered. They also have a dedicated support line with a promised TAT of 24 hours for any queries.
We have talked about features like Smart Volume and connectivity options. Apart from these, one thing worth noting is that the BEE star rating for the TCL is only 2 stars. It consumes about 25 more units on an annual basis than a 4 star rated TV. This does not affect your annual electricity bill in a meaningful way. It is about 250 INR more. But it is definitely something that TCL should be working on.
The TCL packs a lots of high end features in a low price product. Dolby Surround sound, auto volume leveler and cinema mode are user friendly features. For these features and its low price, we would say that this TCL model is a high value for money product.
There are three different TVs by Sony on this list. Mind you, this is a list of top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India. That excludes any other screen size apart from 40 inches. This narrows down the available choices quite a bit. Even in such a small field, the Sony brand comes up many times. This shows product and acceptance from the Indian consumer. The Bravia KLV-40R352E is the lowest priced Sony TV on this list. This does not mean that the Sony lacks in performance. Let’s take a detailed look at how it does on all our parameters. Also, before we get started it is worth mentioning upfront that this Sony model is not a Smart TV.
Sony are the masters of digital signal processing. This is the art and science of enhancing the image from the original video source. Sony has developed many proprietary processes for this. This model features one of these. Clear Resolution Enhancer is the term for this proprietary tech. Each individual pixel is more clear and focused. This makes the viewing experience richer and is also easier on the eyes.
The sound output from this Sony TV is 10W. While this may not sound like a lot, the TV delivers on sound quality. Here again, Sony has a proprietary technology called Clear Phase. Clear Phase helps in focusing the sound being output from the TV. This removes the dispersion of the sound and all available output is in front of the TV. This gives the sound a much more theatrical feel and makes movies and sports come alive.
This Sony TV is not a Smart TV. So the connectivity options play an important role in making your media accessible. This Sony model features 2 HDMI ports and 1 USB port. Apart from these, you can also connect your phone to the TV to view media from the device. The number of connectivity options though is on the lower side.
This model has a standard 1 year manufacturer warranty. An extended warranty is also available. This will set you back around 3400 INR.
This Sony TV seems light on connectivity options. The additional features though are where it shines. There are tons of little customizations made to this product. These make it more appealing to the Indian consumer.
First on the list is the provision of an FM radio. This is a nifty feature. Many of us listen to the radio in the background while going through our morning routines.
Next up is the photo frame mode. You can connect a storage device with photos to the TV and it displays the pictures like a digital photo frame. Another great feature for when you are not watching TV.
The next India friendly customization is TV menu. It is available in different Indian languages. This is great for consumers who are more comfortable with their native language.
Finally, the last customization we would like to point out the Sony X-Protection pro. This is a set of physical features to protect your TV from dust, lightning, humidity and power surges. Problems that occur a lot in India and hence a very thoughtful customization.
This model it is the cheapest Sony TV on our list. But, the Bravia KLV-40R352E performs like a champion. It also has tons of India specific features making it a great value buy in the premium segment.

Sony does not need too much introduction on this list. 4 out of 10 in this list of top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India are from them. This model, the KLV-40W562D is their most premium offering in the 40 inch category. The model is a smart TV.
Picture quality is one of the stand outs on Sony TVs. It continues here too as this model comes equipped with the X-Reality Pro engine. X-Reality Pro enhances the TV picture based on Sony’s proprietary technology. This ensure that you get an optimized picture to give you the best viewing experience. This is especially useful in case you are watching standard definition content on your HD TV.
Apart from the X-Reality Pro, this model also comes with Motionflow XR. In sequences where there is a high amount of motion, you can experience motion lag on screen. The Motionflow XR technology inserts extra frames between the original ones. It compares successive frames and inserts frames between. This gives a blur-free and cinematic look.
The audio output from this Sony model comes in at 30W. This is almost twice of entry level models in the same category. To provide depth and richness of sound, the TV also features a built-in subwoofer. This gives the audio that extra thump to make your TV watching experience that much more special..

Sony are pioneers in TV picture quality. Along with X-Reality Pro, Clear Resolution Enhancer are their proprietary image enhancement technologies. This model features the Clear Resolution Enhancer. This technology enhances contrast and image depth on screen, giving crisper clearer images.
Paired with the Clear Resolution Enhancer comes ClearPhase technology for audio. This technology normalises sound from the TV so it sounds exactly like you are sitting in front of a stage. Sony has been a traditional powerhouse in the field of electronics. It has come up with many innovations in all fields of personal electronics. This is no different with Televisions. The Sony Bravia is at the cutting edge of technology and provides a great experience to the consumer. It is not a surprise that there are four different Sony models in our list of the top 10 40 inch LED TVs in India. This one is the KLV-40W672E. But it has loads of features and is a power packed performer as we will see in its detailed review. This model is a SMART TV. With a WiFi internet connection you can browse apps on its in-built Operating System.
The Asian heavyweights produce quality electronic products. At the top of the heap is Sony. This model by Sony has an image processing technology called the X-Reality Pro. The X-Reality Pro engine analyzes and refines each pixel displayed. This makes the picture shown on the TV that much more detailed. This technology is especially useful for low resolution video.
The X-Reality Pro works on low resolution video like a artist restoring an old painting. It recreates the original colors of the picture. Sony uses this engine for its higher resolution models as well. So you are getting a world class solution in this particular TV. The picture quality is quite outstanding.
The sound system in the KLV-40W672 features a powerful audio output of 30W. To put this into perspective, entry level models in the 40 inch category usually feature an output of 16W. To put the icing on the cake, this Sony also has an in-built woofer. The woofer is custom built to enhance sounds from lower frequencies. This means that you get more thump for your buck.
Like X-Reality Pro, the Sony features ClearAudio+ as a sound technology. ClearAudio+ is an audio processing technology from Sony. It helps you hear dialogue with greater clarity and separation from background sound. Along with the picture, you will have no complaints with the audio quality either.
We noted earlier that this Sony model is a Smart TV. This means that the TV has an operating system which allows it to connect to the internet. The TV remote control has dedicated buttons for YouTube and Netflix. This makes browsing these apps a total breeze. The limitation here is that the OS is not an open source OS like Android TV.
So the TV version of your favorite apps like Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar may not yet be available for this TV. The release is dependent on the individual developers and will take its own sweet time. Not to worry though. In case you do have an android phone, you can connect it to the TV via WiFi and enjoy screen mirroring on the TV.
The Sony also has the standard 2 USB and 2 HDMI ports. The USB ports can play many different audio and video formats. You will not have to struggle to convert your existing movies and music to play them on the TV. Plug and play should work fine given the wide variety of supported formats.
Sony products have legendary reliability. But India’s hot and dusty climate creates problems in equipment like an LED TV. Sony has tackled this problem in two separate ways. First, they have made their equipment more robust. This TV does not have any vents in the back which can let in dust. The TV has in-built protection from lightning and voltage fluctuations. This means that you do not have to worry about purchasing a separate inverter. The circuit board also comes with an anti humidity coating.
Sony also provides a 1 year manufacturer warranty against any defects in the product. When you buy the product online, you also get a 10 day refund window. You can return the product if it does not match your expectations within 10 days. There is alsbuyion to buy an extended warranty. Due to the higher price of the product, the warranty too costs about INR 3400 for one year.
While we have already told you about many of the in-built features, there are more to discuss. The TV menu is accessible in different Indian languges. Apart from smartphone mirroring via WiFi, you can also plug smartphones in to the TV. Photos, videos and music from the phone can be played. This Sony also scores an impressive 4 stars on the BEE energy efficiency rating.
No doubt the Sony TVs are are expensive than other brands in this list. But if you are considering investing in a TV which provides excellent picture and sound quality, the Sony is a good choice.
Despite its very Japanese sounding name, Daiwa is an Indian brand. The manufacturing is also done in India. Daiwa is one of the youngest brands in this list. Daiwa’s parent company Videotex assembles TVs for other brands like Intex and Micromax. The Daiwa brand fills the need of quality products at a reasonable price. With a line up of TVs from 24 to 48 inches, Daiwa has gone from strength to strength. Today, we look at their 40 inch TV which is the most affordable TV available on this list. The TV is non-smart. Lets see how it performs on our various parameters.
The Daiwa TV boasts of an A+ grade panel. This means that the panel is completely transparent while manufacturing. This gives better clarity of colors in the pictures displayed. Daiwa also has a unique technology called HRDP. This enhances the clarity, color and contrast of the picture. While watching movies, an option of cinema zoom is also available. Another valuable feature on the Daiwa TV is the low input lag. The lag time is a mere 6.5 ms and compares well with the standard of 8 ms for most other TVs. This helps in gaming and watching fast sports on TV. All in all, the Daiwa provides a very satisfying picture quality from this low price TV.
This Daiwa model comes with a sound output of 20W. This is not bad at all for an entry level model and compares well with models that output 16W. The Daiwa TV also has in-built high fidelity surround sound. This gives great depth and immersion while watching movies on the TV. The sound quality is good and you might not need to buy a sound bar for this one.
For those of you who have many media devices, Daiwa has great connectivity options. This TV features 3 USB and 2 HDMI ports as compared to the standard figure of 2 each on other TVs. The USB slots can play jpeg images, mp3 audio and movie files.
The Daiwa TV comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty. An extended warranty is available from their e-commerce partners or from the Daiwa website. Daiwa also has their own app for customers to register their product.
Two great features provided on the Daiwa TV are bluetooth connectivity and the universal audio remote. Bluetooth connectivity can connect any device and you can play your audio on the TV. This is also a useful feature if you lose your TV remote and need to use your phone as an alternative remote control. The Daiwa TV remote can control your home theatre systems and wireless headphones. This makes it easy to control all your audio devices in one go.
This Daiwa TV is one of the most afforable TVs on our list. It is one of the top contenders for the best value for money TV given its pricing and solid set of features.
When it comes to Indian electronics, there are few that have higher brand recall than Onida. Famous for the slogan of Neighbors Envy, Owners Pride, Onida as a brand has been around since the 1980s. Today, they are present in many product categories. The category they continue to remain most well known for is TVs. While their products are not the lowest priced in the market, they attempt to strike a balance between price and value. Lets see in more detail how their 40 inch Full HD LEO40FV/LEO40FBL model fares in our review.
While full HD in itself is a great technology for improving image quality, most TV manufacturers today also include an image engine to improve contrast and image depth. Onida also has their proprietary image engine named SRVe. SRVe stands for Super Real Visual engine. This technology reduces noise and improves sharpness and contrast of the image.
Booming sound is a hallmark of Onida. This TV too features a powerful sound output of 18 Watts. Along with the good sound output, the TV also features an in-built surround sound system.
Onida has done a good job of providing connectivity options in this model. Apart from the 2 USB and HDMI ports, the TV also features a VGA input, 2 AV inputs for your DVD player and an option to connect your headphones as well.
Onida provides a standard 1 year manufacturer warranty. An extended warranty is available for separate purchase.
This Onida TV is priced in between the high end manufacturers like Sony and the budget manufactures like Daiwa, Kevin and TCL. We are not sure if the higher pricing is justified given that the budget competitors are upto par on features.
BPL has been a household name in India for many decades now. The company started off as British Physical Laboratories in the medical devices field. Through a joint venture with Sanyo, the company then moved into consumer electronics. At one point, a large number of households in India had one or the other BPL product at home. After their JV ended with Sanyo in 2007, BPL has been getting back on its feet in the field of consumer electronics. Strong brand recall, presence on e-commerce sites and high quality products. These are the factors leading their revival. They offer TVs in the size range of 24 to 49 inches. The company is planning on expanding its product range in the future. The product we are looking at today is their Vivid model which is a 40 inch Full HD LED TV. Available at a very competitive price, this product is not a smart TV. Lets look at this product in more detail.
The BPL Vivid is a budget TV. This shows in its specifications as well as picture quality. Response time is an important consideration while purchasing a TV. It refers to the rate at which the pixels change color on the TV. The BPL Vivid has a response time of 8.5 milliseconds. While this is not bad in itself, competitors have been able to bring it down to around 6.5 millseconds. Response time in itself is not responsible for picture quality.
Another important factor is the refresh rate. Here too the BPL vivid is at the lower end of the spectrum with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz. While viewing high definition action scenes and sports, refresh rate is important. The experience on the BPL Vivid for these situations is not the best. Then again, at the price at which it is available, cannot be too picky. We would say that the picture quality of the TV is average.
The BPL Vivid has a total sound output of 16 W. This is the standard power output of most televisions at this price point. In a small room, this level of output is quite adequate. You will have no problems with enjoying your favorite TV programmes. In a large room, this sound output will be inadequate, especially if you are sitting around 10 feet away from the TV. In such a case, we would recommend that you buy an entry level sound bar for a smooth audio experience.
The BPL Vivid comes with 2 USB and 2 HDMI ports. HDMI ports are usually used for devices like set top boxes, Chromecast and Fire stick. For casual users there is almost no scenario where you would need more than this number. The USB ports will connect to your digital storage devices and allow you to browse your media on the big screen.
Both the HDMI and the USB ports for the BPL Vivid are on the back of television. This makes them difficult to access once you have the TV wall mounted. It might be sensible to invest in a pair of HDMI and USB connectors beforehand. So when you need to make a change in your connectivity options, you do not have to hunt around in the back.
BPL provides a manufacturer warranty of 1 year on any defects in the television. An extended warranty is available for the television. This comes to about INR 2000 for a year. The extended warranty is a no questions asked scheme. With it you can services claims and repairs at brand authorized centres only. The product is returnable within 10 days for a full refund in case of any defects.
The BPL Vivid comes with a couple of unique talking points. First is that the TV features a headphone output. This is great for watching something without disturbing others around you. The other talking point is that the BPL Vivid comes with a 5 star BEE rating. BEE refers to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The BEE rates appliances on the amount of power consumed. A 5 star rating implies that the BPL Vivid is very energy efficient. It will definitely not burn a hole in your pocket with its electricity consumption.
The BPL Vivid is among the top 3 in our list when sorted by price. Price, brand name, connectivity options, and energy efficiency make it very good value for money.
